The Creation Of Mirror Lake

In 1905, when the Canadian National Railway reached Camrose, a dam was built across Stoney Creek in order to create a reservoir of water for the many steam locomotives traveling through Camrose; this was the beginning of Mirror Lake. In 1911, a coal fired electrical generator plant was constructed which took advantage of two main water supplies. The town’s drinking water came from Mirror Lake. It was rationed in small quantities and was unpleasant in both taste and smell. In 1923, Calgary Power took over the supply of water and power. Eventually, after much work and investment into the water supply, the quality of water improved.
