Stoney Creek Collieries

Stoney Creek Collieries opened in 1910 and employed a few hundred men. The underground mine located on the north bank of the valley had shafts extending from the valley floor as far as two miles west and north and ran nearly 30 metres below the surface. The coal that was mined was sold and used for domestic consumption and the slack coal was hauled to the power plant for burning in the production of electricity. The mine’s tipple burned in 1940 and the mine was closed.
